PETALING JAYA:
Wanita PKR legal and community development bureau chief Fadhlina Sidek has called for a special committee to protect the rights of children in shariah courts.

She said the committee should be tasked with ensuring legal representation for children, especially in cases concerning child marriages.

It should also ensure that children involved in custody battles have access to mental health programmes so that they feel supported to make decisions in a neutral manner.

Speaking at the launch of Sisters in Islam’s (SIS) 2021 Telenisa legal clinic statistics and findings, Fadhlina also said literacy and advocacy must be improved to protect the rights of women and children in shariah courts.

Also present at the event was Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah.
