MRT pledges all-round improvement

MRT Corp CEO Zarif Hashim says infrastructure and service enhancement will encourage greater use of public transport.

MRT Corp CEO Zarif Hashim says commuters can look forward to service improvements on the MRT.
PETALING JAYA:
Ongoing infrastructure improvement to the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network will be matched by service improvements, says its CEO, Zarif Hashim.

In an interview with FMT, Zarif said these enhancements are being made in tandem with the construction of the MRT3 Circle Line.

He said Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, which operates the MRT lines, is making investments in technology to ensure further digitalisation of public transport.

“As we construct MRT3, there will also be improvements of service led by Prasarana in the end-to-end mobility of commuters.

“This will include every single form of mobility such as car-sharing, taxi and e-hailing, bicycles and even personal vehicles and walking.

“Through digitalisation efforts and better integration, commuters will be able to use their time more efficiently as they will know easily where and how to connect to the various lines within the transit network,” he said.

Zarif said once these improvements were in place, the government might be looking at ways to further discourage the use of private vehicles for journeys into the city centre.

“These may include introducing a vehicle and environment fee, increasing the parking levy within the city or even revising the fuel subsidy for areas with good public transport.

“For these reasons, we hope the improved network will enable the public to leave their cars behind and use public transport instead,” he said.

MRT3 is a 50.8km circular alignment that will run along the perimeter of Kuala Lumpur.

Estimated to cost RM31 billion plus RM8 billion for land acquisition, the line will consist of 31 stations, including 10 interchange stations with existing rail lines in the Klang Valley.

It is slated to be fully operational by 2030 with the first phase set to begin operations in 2028.
