Restaurant manager pleads not guilty to drink-driving, causing death

The 32-year-old is accused of committing the offence in Kuala Lumpur shortly after midnight on March 12.

KUALA LUMPUR:
A restaurant manager was charged in the magistrates’ court here today with driving under the influence of alcohol and causing the death of a motorcyclist last month.

Nazrin Ramli, 32, pleaded not guilty to the charge before magistrate Amanina Mohamad Anuar.

Nazrin was charged with driving a car in a dangerous manner while under the influence of alcohol, with alcohol content in his blood exceeding 21mg of the prescribed limit, resulting in him losing control of the car and causing the death of Ramli Abdul Ajit, 40.

He is alleged to have committed the offence at Jalan Kuching heading towards the city here at 12.10am on March 12.

He was charged under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act, which provides for a jail sentence of up to 15 years and a maximum fine of RM100,000, as well as suspension of his driving licence for at least 10 years, upon conviction.

The court allowed him bail of RM12,000 in one surety and ordered his driving licence to be suspended pending disposal of the case.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Nursyuhada Abd Rauf prosecuted, while Nazrin was represented by J Thilagavathy.

The court set June 2 for mention.
