A magistrates’ court here has ordered a Universiti Malaya (UM) civil engineering graduate to enter his defence on the charge of insulting former vice-chancellor Abdul Rahim Hashim during his 2019 convocation.

Lawyer Tan Wei Shin said the magistrate ruled that the prosecution had established its case against Wong Yan Ke under Section 504 of the Penal Code.

Deputy public prosecutor Fahirah Norjihan Mokhtar prosecuted.

Wong, who is currently a Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) coordinator, allegedly committed the offence during UM’s 59th convocation at the Dewan Tunku Canselor hall in October 2019.

The then president of the Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany) movement, created a stir while receiving his scroll when he carried a protest placard on stage demanding the resignation of the vice-chancellor.
