In a recent survey, Persatuan Kebangsaan Pelajar Islam Malaysia (PKPIM) found that pricier food had affected students nationwide.
It attributed the hike to the increase in the price of raw ingredients such as chicken, eggs, oil, and bread, which had affected the vendors.
“PKPIM recommends subsidies for university cafe operators to ensure the rising cost of raw ingredients does not affect the prices of meals at higher education institutions,” its deputy-president Nazmi Rahim said in a statement.
He urged the higher education ministry, and the domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry to resolve the issue.
Nazmi also said the association would distribute meals to students breaking their fast during Ramadan.
“PKPIM is ready to work with all parties to ensure the welfare of students is maintained,” it said.
