KUALA LUMPUR:
Government and Pakatan Harapan leaders are to meet on Thursday to finalise matters relating to the Anti-Party Hopping Bill before it is tabled in Parliament on April 11.

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the meeting would involve the steering committee for the memorandum of understanding, comprising 10 members from the government and opposition.

He said Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had given the government’s commitment to table the bill and had sought the opposition’s views on the matter.

“Only several articles or clauses in the bill need to be fine-tuned,” he told a media conference after opening the annual meeting of PKR’s Lembah Pantai division.

On Thursday, law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar told the Dewan Rakyat that the bill would be tabled at a special sitting on April 11.

Wan Junaidi said the prime minister had agreed that the sitting could be extended if necessary, to discuss the bill.

Question mark over independent MPs

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the term “party-hopping” itself is still unclear, and there were several issues that need further discussion.

“The issue here is whether independent MPs or state assemblymen are considered to be party-hopping if they want to join other parties,” he said.

He said similar laws must also be enacted by state assemblies so that it can be enforced against state assembly members.
