As such, the Kulai MP asked if Ismail Sabri Yaakob had merely tried to score political points by choosing to make the announcement as though it was a new policy at the Umno general assembly last week.
“International students are already required to take Malay communications as a subject under the general studies (pelajaran umum) subject.
“The academic community and students are wondering why the PM had to announce an existing policy as though it was new. This has been in place since 2014,” she said in a statement today.
Teo said Ismail should have checked with the relevant officials from the ministry before making the announcement, adding that he should now clarify the matter so as to clear the air.
Speaking at the Umno general assembly on March 19, Ismail said international students will be required to learn Malay when they enrol at universities in the country.
He said he had spoken to higher education minister Noraini Ahmad, who had agreed with his suggestion.
