KUALA LUMPUR:
The anti-party hopping bill will be tabled at a special parliamentary sitting scheduled for April 11.

Law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said he had discussed the matter with Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

“We met and agreed that a special meeting will be held on April 11 for us to debate the anti-party hopping bill,” he said when winding up the debate on the Constitutional (Amendment) Bill 2022 in the Dewan Rakyat here today.

He said this in reply to Lim Guan Eng (PH-Bagan) who stood up to ask when the special parliamentary sitting would be held to enable both parties to prepare accordingly.

Wan Junaidi said there would be no problems for the special sitting to be held during the month of Ramadan as the Dewan Rakyat had previously held sittings during the fasting month.

“The prime minister also said that if we are unable to debate the bill in one day, the special sitting can be held over two days,” he added.

Wan Junaidi was previously reported to have said that several proposed constitutional amendments would be tabled during the sitting, including provisions on party hopping and those to limit the prime minister’s term to two terms.

This is in line with the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the government and Pakatan Harapan on Sept 13, 2021.
