PM can announce anything, anywhere, says deputy minister

This comes after Lim Guan Eng asked why Ismail Sabri Yaakob used the Umno general assembly to announce the minimum wage increase.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Deputy special functions minister Mastura Mohd Yazid has defended Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob for declaring a revision to the minimum wage rate at the Umno general assembly.

“It is the prime minister’s prerogative to make announcements at any forum that he feels is appropriate,” she said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Mastura said Ismail had also announced the transition to the Covid-19 endemic phase at a press conference.

She was replying to a supplementary question from Lim Guan Eng (PH-Bagan), who suggested that the National Recovery Council (MPN) be dissolved as it seemed to have no function after Ismail announced policy changes at the Umno general assembly.

“MPN should just be dissolved because the economic policy change announced by the prime minister at a political conference was not based on any MPN recommendation,” said Lim.

The former finance minister also questioned the council’s function and whether it was effective.

During the closing of the Umno general assembly last Saturday, Ismail announced that the minimum wage would be raised from RM1,200 to RM1,500 on May 1.

The minimum wage was last increased from RM1,100 to RM1,200 in February 2020.
