KUALA LUMPUR:
The government paid an ex gratia of RM1.5 million to the family of the late fireman Adib Mohd Kassim last November, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob revealed at the Umno general assembly today.

“This is proof of Umno’s sincerity in championing the rights of the rakyat,” the party vice-president said in his winding-up speech.

Adib, a member of the emergency medical rescue services unit from the Subang Jaya fire and rescue station, sustained serious injuries during a riot at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ 25, Subang Jaya on Nov 27, 2018.

He died on Dec 17, 21 days after he was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) in a critical condition. He was 24.

Law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, had earlier announced a special committee to look into the case after coroner Rofiah Mohamad ruled that “more than two unidentified persons” had been responsible for his death.

She said it was up to the police and the attorney-general to bring charges.
