Deputy inspector-general of police Razarudin Husain said the police would actively monitor irresponsible activities amid the excitement from the public with regard to the special withdrawal announced by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob yesterday.
“We will monitor and remind the public (about scams) through social media every day,” he said in a media conference.
Razarudin said that in the past, there were still people who fell victim to scams despite advice from the police, including about the scammers’ modus operandi.
“We reminded the people every day but there were still people who get scammed. I don’t understand how it happens despite the reminders,” he said.
The prime minister said that the government had made a difficult decision to allow the public to tap into their retirement savings again as some Malaysians are still affected financially by the economic impact caused by the Covid-19 pandemic over the past two years.
Previously, finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz had repeatedly said that the government would not allow another withdrawal after it had done so under the three schemes, i-Lestari, i-Sinar, and i-Citra in 2020 and 2021.
