Widow of Sabah’s first chief minister dies

Rahimah Stephens was the first female member to be part of the Sabah state assembly in 1976.

Rahimah Stephens had also served as Sabah’s community service minister.

Rahimah Stephens, widow of Sabah’s first chief minister, Fuad Stephens, passed away this morning. She was 92.

According to the Borneo Post, her daughter, Fauziah, confirmed the death.

The former Kiulu assemblyman is survived by three children –  Asgari, Faridah and Fauziah.

Rahimah was the first female member to be part of the Sabah state legislative assembly in 1976.

She had also served as Sabah’s community service minister.

Musa Aman recounts her zest for life

Former Sabah chief minister Musa Aman described Rahimah as a “strong gracious woman of remarkable character” who pioneered women’s role in public service.

She had been the first Sabah woman Cabinet minister under the Berjaya government.

Rahimah, he said, remained humble and kind despite the numerous challenges she faced including the tragic death of her husband.

“Her strength in character is equally matched by her zest for life reflected by her love for dancing ripe into her golden years,” he said in a statement.
