PH must work with Perikatan, say Amanah Youth chiefs

The six divisional leaders also call for heads to roll following the opposition coalition's series of election failures.

Pakatan Harapan should work with Perikatan Nasional to contest the next general election, say several Amanah Youth leaders.
PETALING JAYA:
Six Amanah Youth chiefs have called on Pakatan Harapan (PH) to work with Perikatan Nasional (PN) in contesting the next general election, following the coalition’s “humbling defeat” at the recent Johor polls.

In a joint statement, they called on PH leaders to set aside personal differences and adopt a “pragmatic” approach by working with other like-minded parties, such as Pejuang, Muda, Warisan and PN.

Such cooperation was necessary to avoid another humiliating defeat at the next national elections, they said and demanded that heads be made to roll over a series of election defeats.

PH and PN had contested separately at the Johor state assembly elections and suffered major losses, with PH securing 12 seats and PN 3 whereas Barisan Nasional secured 40 seats for a two-thirds majority in the state assembly.

PH had also suffered major defeats in the Melaka and Sarawak state elections late last year.

The Amanah Youth leaders also called for “formidable new leaders” to be appointed in the coalition, and an end to “conflicting self-aggrandizing desires that will hinder opposition unity”.

The six were Zulhafiz Zulkifli (Lembah Pantai); Hafizzuddin Razian (Kepong); Nur Fadhil (Bandar Tun Razak); Sheikh Khuzaifah (Bukit Bintang); Haripra Lazuardi (Batu) and Raja Haziq (Cheras).

One of the 12 seats was won by a PKR candidate contesting on the party’s own logo while DAP and Amanah candidates used the PH logo.

The six Amanah leaders lambasted the decision to use two different logos, calling it, “utterly unacceptable”.

They also described as intolerable the lack of any serious attempt at discussing any pact with other opposition parties.

Earlier today, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had called for a “big tent” approach minus PN for the opposition to contest elections. He said the opposition must face the “harsh reality” and bear some responsibility for PH’s defeat in Johor.

Lim said that the lack of unity among the opposition, including the refusal to use a common logo or discuss the menteri besar candidate were among the factors the coalition lost in the March 12 polls.
