PETALING JAYA:
Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari has been urged to implement the RM15 million Taman Melawis flood mitigation project.

Klang MP Charles Santiago said work on this flood scheme, which had already been approved, needed to be carried out urgently to prevent the recurrence of floods.

Santiago said he was heart-broken after visiting areas in Klang where homes were once again hit by the floods today after heavy rain from 6am to 7.30am.

“We can certainly mitigate disastrous consequences if there is a political will to do so.

“People cannot go on suffering like this from these floods,” he said.

Santiago said the areas affected today included Taman Melawis, Pandamaran, Taman Bayu Perdana and parts of Port Klang. These areas had also been hit by floods last December.

The MP met the Melawis Residents Association together with Klang Municipal Council (MPK), and irrigation and drainage department (JPS) officers earlier today.

Santiago said JPS had promised to increase the pump capacity at the flood gates at Taman Melawis.

MPK, on its part, will improve the flood ponds along Jalan Tanjung and Jalan Lining Besi Satu.

He said he would continue to ask the works ministry to allocate RM6 million to clear and improve drains in Klang to channel floodwater swiftly.

Earlier, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the federal government had announced an additional RM15 billion for flood mitigation projects between 2023 and 2030.
