PETALING JAYA:
A group of prominent Southeast Asian politicians and activists has urged Asean member countries to keep on voicing out against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Southeast Asian Community (SEAC) said hostilities should cease, military personnel and weapons withdrawn, and efforts taken to resume high-level talks.

“We reiterate our unequivocal support to the principles enshrined in the UN Charter and to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all UN member states.

“SEAC reminds all of their responsibility to uphold existing international laws and calls on all international institutions to act vigorously against any violations of international laws,” it said in a statement today.

Among the group’s members are Subang MP Wong Chen and lawmakers such as Sam Rainsy, Kasit Piromya, Mu Sochua and Emil Kirjas.

SEAC called on European countries to engage in direct unconditional dialogue with Russia and Ukraine to seek regional peace and stability

“All efforts must be employed to avoid a protracted and expanded global conflict.

“SEAC also calls for the immediate resumption of the high-level meetings between Russia and the US, and the recurrent high-level diplomacy among various stakeholders, in particular those in the UN Security Council,” it said.

The UN human rights office confirmed on March 2 that 227 civilians had been killed and 525 injured in Ukraine following the Russian invasion.
