PETALING JAYA:
Graphic artist and activist Fahmi Reza said today that he expects to face a new charge on Thursday under the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA).

“Two charges in a month! Who would have guessed a graphic designer is able to threaten the authorities,” he said on Twitter. Fahmi said he will fight the fresh charge, insisting that “satire is not a crime”.

However, Fahmi did not state the nature of the charge or which of his postings it will be about. His lawyer Rajsurian Pillai said the police had informed them to appear before the Kuala Lumpur sessions court on Thursday.

Last week Fahmi had pleaded not guilty in the sessions court to a charge of insulting former health minister Dr Adham Baba in a Twitter posting on Feb 10 last year. He was released on a RM5,000 bail.

The prosecution contended that he made the posting with the intention to annoy others. The tweet had touched on the 2021 Cabinet policy that allowed ministers to observe a three-day quarantine, instead of 10 days, after they returned from overseas.

Adham was the health minister from March 2020 to August 2021. He is currently the science, technology and innovation minister.
