Izhar, who was the state executive councillor in charge of investment, entrepreneurs, cooperatives and human resources, announced his exit from the party at a press conference today.
Izhar’s resignation follows that of former Johor Bersatu chief and former state executive councillor Mazlan Bujang last week.
“I had a hard time making this decision, but I feel that Bersatu has lost its direction,” he said.
Izhar added that one of the main reasons he resigned was that he had lost confidence in party president Muhyiddin Yassin.
“In my opinion, the Bersatu president has not only failed to take the party to another level, but he has also not put in any effort towards strengthening the party.”
Izhar also declared support for Barisan Nasional.
However, he said he would not defend the Larkin state seat or contest in any state seat in the upcoming snap polls.
“I believe BN can make things right. BN is the only party that can bring us together under one banner,” he added.
“I call on voters, especially in my Larkin constituency, to cast their votes for BN candidates,” he added.
On the speculation that more Bersatu assemblymen would follow suit and quit the party, Izhar refused to confirm it.
“When I made the decision to quit the party, I didn’t discuss with the party first. The same goes for Mazlan. We made the decisions on our own.”
