Law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the tabling of the bill was in line with Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s desire to speed up the enactment of an anti-hopping law.

Yesterday, Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil had said 13 of the 18 proposals in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and the federal government last September had been implemented.

However, he said, the tabling of an anti-hopping bill had yet to be carried out.

The MoU on transformation and political stability, covering six key areas, was signed on Sept 13, 2021 by Ismail and PH’s presidential council comprising PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and Upko president Wilfred Madius Tangau.

It is aimed at bringing about the political stability needed to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic and reviving the country’s economy.

Meanwhile, Wan Junaidi said a technical committee will be set up by next week to look into policies related to anti-party hopping issues.

“There will be eight members in the technical committee that consists of four government representatives and four PH representatives,” he added.

Last month, he was reported as saying that the anti-party hopping bill is expected to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat during the July sitting.

According to Wan Junaidi, the government was studying whether there was a need to amend the Federal Constitution or create a new law before the anti-party hopping bill can be presented.
