Party information chief Ulya Aqamah Husamudin said the resignation of Edmund Terrence Gomez from the anti-graft panel was “shocking and worrying”.
In his resignation letter, Gomez yesterday said disturbing questions had been raised about the “nexus between business and law enforcement” and a “conflict of interest” situation involving Azam and his alleged extensive ownership of corporate stock.
Ulya claimed the lax attitude of MACC’s Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel not to urge or hold a meeting over the allegations linked to the chief commissioner raises doubts and speculation.
Initiating a probe into allegations of Azam’s misconduct should have been given priority, he said.
“Azam should also be placed on garden leave to make way for the probe,” Ulya said, as a way to restore the public’s trust towards MACC.
He said MACC’s main task is to eliminate corruption and protect informants who take the risk of disclosing information and misconduct.
“Who should the public go to if even MACC can no longer be trusted?” he asked.
Due to that, he said Pejuang wants an immediate probe into the matter to restore the image of MACC.
Earlier today, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang and Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi urged Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to end his silence over the issue involving the top MACC official, following the resignation of Gomez.
