He was replying to Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob who said yesterday that the flood was not only caused by the rainwater but was also due to the EKVE project.
The project was approved by the Selangor government under then menteri besar Azmin Ali.
Amirudin, however, said that based on initial information received, the floods that hit Hulu Langat were due to water heads gushing down from the surrounding mountains.
He said that some 30 landslides were reported in Hulu Langat.
“And these landslides cause the water head phenomenon,” he said referring to the sudden and rapid rise in water volume in the upper part of the river.
The water head phenomenon is caused by a water surge following heavy rains.
Amirudin said he would discuss with the prime minister over his statement about the highway project.
On the flood situation in the state, Amirudin noted that over 11,000 victims from 2,892 families are still in temporary relief centres after the severe floods that hit on Dec 18.
He said about 11,598 victims remained at 54 temporary relief centres in eight districts.
Amirudin said the Selangor floods had affected over 40,000 people from 9,000 families. A total of 205 temporary relief centres have been opened to victims since Dec 18.
The death toll due to the flood disaster in the state, he said, was now at 25.
Commenting on the aid distribution for households affected by the floods, Amirudin said the state government had grouped the victims into three categories.
“Category 1 involves victims who were placed at state relief centres, category 2 is for victims who were placed at private relief centres and category 3 is for victims who were affected but did not evacuate their homes,” he explained.
He said registration for the aid would be conducted in stages starting Dec 29.
“For victims in categories 1 and 2, details of the victims have already been collected at the relief centres. However, for victims in category 3, the state government will set up one-stop centres in the state. These victims can register for the aid at the centres.”
The government will contribute RM1,000 for each household affected by the floods, while the next of kin of each victim who perished in the floods would receive RM10,000 from the government.
