PETALING JAYA:
With the Barisan Nasional-led Johor state assembly majority now reduced to one seat, menteri besar Hasni Mohammad admits that the government is “more unstable” and has not ruled out calling for a snap election.

He said the matter needed to be looked into as the government had only a razor-thin majority in the state assembly now following the death of Bersatu’s Kempas assemblyman Osman Sapian earlier this week.

“Osman’s death has reduced the majority of the ruling coalition to one, thus making it more unstable.

“Therefore, I need to get some feedback, especially from the component parties in the ruling coalition.

“My meeting with Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob recently was to brief him on the razor-thin majority,” Utusan Malaysia quoted Hasni as saying.

Osman, who was the menteri besar when Pakatan came to power on 2018, died at his son’s residence in Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, on Dec 21.

Following his death, the BN-led state government has 28 seats, with BN having 16, Bersatu 11 and PAS one. Pakatan Harapan has 27 seats.

Hasni, who is also the Johor Umno chief, said he would consider all the feedback from state assemblymen when they attend a special sitting on Jan 6, which has been scheduled to amend the state constitution to reduce the voting and political candidates’ minimum age to 18.

He also said there was no necessity for a by-election for the Kempas seat as the seat had fallen vacant more than three years after the last general election was held.

“I will look into the need for holding any state elections after assessing the latest development,” Hasni said.
