PETALING JAYA:
Those affected by the recent floods have been urged to review their insurance policies as flooding is only an optional cover under the standard fire and motor policy.

The General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) and the Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA) advised those affected by the floods to contact their respective agents for further advice and clarification if they are planning to make any claims.

Policyholders should review their coverage to ensure that their properties were insured against flooding and should contact their agents for further advice as to the scope of coverage and terms and conditions, they said.

PIAM and MTA assured all policy or certificate holders affected by the floods that they would assist in minimising the financial impact through the expedited claims process and by giving special considerations on a case-by-case basis.

“If their policy covers flooding, they must notify their agent and provide detailed information including relevant supporting documents. Depending on the severity of loss, the agent may appoint an independent loss adjuster to assist them in filing their claim,” the associations said.

Subsequently, they reminded policy or certificate holders who were not impacted by the floods to consider reviewing their coverage.

“They must ensure that their interests are adequately protected for natural calamities like floods, which are occurring on a more frequent basis due to the effects and fallout from the global climate crisis,” they said.
