Both BN and PN woo ‘kingmaker’ GPS in GE15

Mohamad Hasan and Muhyiddin Yassin have both pledged to continue cooperating with GPS.
PETALING JAYA:
The two major coalitions in West Malaysia, Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) have pledged to continue working with “kingmaker” Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), a move which is crucial for both of them in the next general election.

In congratulating GPS on its landslide victory in the Sarawak state elections, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said they would continue working with the coalition in the future, while PN chairman Muhyuiddin Yassin specifically hoped its good ties with GPS would be reflected in GE15.

Mohamad, who is also BN deputy chairman, said the GPS victory was due to the hard work by its members.

“Sarawakians support policies that place emphasis on political stability and development,” he said in a statement today.

Yesterday, GPS won 76 state seats, while Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) and DAP won four and two seats respectively. Sarawak has a total of 82 seats.

Muhyuiddin, in congratulating GPS for its outstanding success, said the coalition was a loyal friend of PN when he was leading the government.

“God willing, the understanding and cooperation between PN and GPS will be reflected in the next general election,” the Bersatu president said at the opening of the party’s annual general assembly today.

Warisan president Shafie Apdal, in a statement, said the GPS victory showed that Sarawakians had endorsed Borneo-based parties to protect their rights.

“It is clear that GPS commands the confidence of the people,” he added.

Pakatan Harapan chairman Anwar Ibrahim, in accepting the verdict of the voters, said the coalition would review its election results immediately.

“We hope to come back stronger,” he said in a statement.

PKR and Amanah lost all the seats they contested in the state elections.
