GPS candidate cancels lucky draw after PH rival lodges report

Asajaya candidate Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah says he only wanted to encourage people to come out and vote.

Asajaya candidate Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said he would keep the prizes for the intended lucky draw for an event to celebrate his victory.
KUCHING:
A GPS candidate has cancelled a lucky draw for voters in the Sarawak state elections after the move was criticised by his opponents.

Previously, Sarawak PKR election director Dominique Ng, together with the party’s candidate Mahmud Epah, had complained about an alleged corrupt practice by Asajaya incumbent Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah in running a lucky draw as part of his election campaign.

Both Ng and Mahmud lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on this matter.

Speaking to reporters in Mukah, Karim said he decided to cancel the lucky draw and would keep the prizes for his “post-victory celebration”.

He added that there was no offence committed as he was just advising the people to go out and vote.

“I had no intention to give out any remuneration to voters. This lucky draw is a game of chance. We do not know who will win.

“Who knows, someone who supports PKR can also win the prize.

“My conscience is clear. I was just encouraging more people to come out and vote,” he said.

This morning, Sarawak MACC confirmed that it had received information with regard to a campaign video for the Asajaya constituency.

In a statement, the anti-graft agency said Mahmud and Ng went to the Kuching MACC office yesterday to provide information on the video by Karim.

“The PKR candidate and his counsel also submitted a copy of the police report related to the same issue to the Kuching MACC office,” it said.

Sarawak MACC also dismissed claims that it refused to accept the complaint made by Ng and that its officers had not introduced themselves.

The agency also denied Ng’s allegation that he and Mahmud were treated like “guilty people” as they were surrounded by six officers, pointing out the staff present were all on duty at the time.
