10 MRSM students expelled over bullying incident, says Mara

Mara director-general Azhar Abdul Manan says the decision shows Mara will not tolerate bullying in its educational institutions.

The bullying incident was a result of the victim having told off one of his bullies for watching porn on his mobile phone.
PETALING JAYA:
A boarding school in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, has expelled 10 students over their alleged involvement in a bullying incident.

A video of the incident involving Form One students at the Sultan Azlan Shah Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) went viral on social media recently.

In the video, a student was seen being assaulted by a group of his peers.

Mara director-general Azhar Abdul Manan said the decision to expel the boys was made after the disciplinary board deliberated on the incident today.

“Mara takes the bullying incident seriously, and the penalty decided shows we will not compromise with bullying among students in our educational institutions.

“We hope this will be a lesson not only for the students involved, but also to other students that such actions will not be tolerated,” he said in a statement.

Last week, police arrested 10 students – nine 13-year-olds and a 15-year-old – over the incident. They were all released on police bail after questioning.

Early investigation found the incident took place on Dec 9 between 1am and 2am.

Police said they would also call the whistleblower who first uploaded the video on Twitter to give a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998 for improper use of the network.

Several other videos lasting between 13 to 30 seconds were also uploaded showing the victim being instructed to remain standing before he was kicked from behind as well as punched several times in the abdomen.

Meanwhile, Perak police chief Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said that the bullying incident was a result of the victim having told off one of his bullies for watching porn on his mobile phone, which angered the latter.

“The victim also warned that he would complain to the teacher or warden if that suspect did not stop watching pornographic videos. This is one of the reasons why he was assaulted by the suspects,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

According to Mior, the fight initially only involved the victim and one suspect, but a Form Three student then ordered his other friends to attack the victim.

“We arrested and questioned the 10 students who were involved in the incident.

“Eight witnesses were also called to testify and the police have confiscated 11 mobile phones to be sent to forensics for analysis,” he said.

Mior said the police received two reports regarding the incident, from the school principal and the victim’s father, respectively, and that the case would be referred to the deputy public prosecutor for prosecution once the investigation was completed.

“We were informed that the victim who received further treatment at a hospital in Selangor is in a stable condition without any serious injuries,” Mior said.
