He said this was one of the revised preemptive measures being implemented on travellers from tomorrow in light of the Omicron Covid-19 variant.
“Travellers from the UK, US, Australia, France and Norway who are under home quarantine will need to wear digital tracking devices,” he said in a statement today.
He said that as of yesterday, these five countries had been placed on Malaysia’s list of countries that had reported community transmission of the Omicron variant of concern.
Arrivals from these countries would be placed on a mandatory seven-day or 10-day quarantine, depending on one’s vaccination status. PCR tests are required on the fifth day of the seven-day quarantine or on the eighth day of the 10-day quarantine.
They will be quarantined either at home or at a designated quarantine centre, and the quarantine may be extended depending on risk evaluation on the last day of quarantine.
Travellers will be released from quarantine on Day 8 or Day 10 if the PCR tests on Day 5 or Day 8 show negative results for Covid-19.
Khairy also said that until Dec 6, 43 countries had reported Omicron cases.
In light of this development, he said the ministry was taking further preventive steps on travellers arriving via the VTL land, VTL air, Langkawi travel bubble, One Stop Centre for short-term business visitors and travellers from countries that had reports of the new variant.
The following are the other requirements:
- Malaysia-Singapore VTL
Travellers on the air VTL are required to take an RT-PCR test. Those on the land VTL are required to take a professionally conducted RTK-Antigen Covid-19 test two days before departure for Malaysia.
Air travellers are also subject to an RT-PCR test upon arrival at KLIA or Klia2, or a professionally conducted RTK-Antigen Covid-19 test at the Larkin Sentral bus terminal in Johor Bahru, Johor, for land VTL travellers.
Mandatory quarantine is not required but all VTL travellers must undergo a Covid-19 test every day for six days upon arrival in Malaysia.
Travellers must upload their test results on MySejahtera.
- Langkawi Travel Bubble
Vaccinated travellers can travel to Langkawi except those from the eight African countries with a high risk of Omicron infection – Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
Travellers will need to take an RT-PCR test two days before departure to Malaysia, and upon arrival at Langkawi International Airport.
Upon arrival in Langkawi, a digital home surveillance order will be issued, and travellers can go to their hotels while waiting for their test results.
Travellers must test for Covid-19 through a professionally conducted RTK-Antigen test on Days 3 and 5 post-arrival and self-antigen test on Days 2, 4, and 6 after arrival.
All individuals must report their test results on MySejahtera.
Travellers must also take a PCR test two days before leaving Langkawi.
