
His candidacy is despite his party, Bersatu, saying it would not contest in the polls out of respect for ruling coalition and federal partners Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
Ali is the two-term incumbent for Krian.
Ali’s aide, Vernon Kedit, said the Saratok MP will be in a four-cornered fight against Parti Sarawak Bersatu’s (PSB) Musa Dinggat, Parti Bumi Kenyalang’s Danny Kuan and GPS’ Friday Belik.
Ali, who is also the federal deputy energy and natural resources minister, had reportedly denied surrendering his seat to GPS.
He was among the MPs who defected from Pakatan Harapan in the Sheraton Move in February last year, which led to the toppling of the federal government and several state governments.
He joined Bersatu in August that year.
