Frozen chicken imports will help bring down prices, says ministry

The imports have been allowed for three months until February next year.

The government is reviewing the wholesale and maximum prices for standard chicken.
PETALING JAYA:
The government’s move to allow the import of frozen whole chicken is expected to reduce prices.

Domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry secretary-general Hasnol Zam Zam Ahmad said prices will normally drop slightly when there is more supply in the market.

The agriculture and food industries ministry announced yesterday that the government had allowed the import of frozen whole chicken until February next year.

Speaking to Bernama after visiting the Malaysian Family Sales Programme (PJKM) here today, Hasnol said his ministry was also reviewing the maximum prices for retail (RM9.30 per kg) and wholesale (RM8 per kg) of standard chicken.

The ministry was also waiting for feedback on the ground on how the imports had affected prices.

On PJKM, Hasnol said the programme may be expanded and its duration extended till after next February if there was demand from the people.
