KUALA LUMPUR:
Umno MP Nazri Aziz today claimed that the capital was “losing its identity” with many of the buildings and residential areas being given English names.

During a debate in the Dewan Rakyat, he said such a tactic was employed to boost sales and occupancy.

“Kuala Lumpur is becoming like London because roads and new buildings are given English names,” he said when debating the 2022 Supply Bill for the federal territories ministry at the committee level.

He cited Hampshire Residences and Bangsar South as examples.

He also asked the ministry why Bangsar South could not be called “Bangsar Selatan”.

In 2019, it was reported that Bangsar South had officially reverted to Kg Kerinchi.

The Padang Rengas MP also told the ministry that Kuala Lumpur City Hall was responsible for approving the names of buildings and areas.

He said there had been claims that the names had to be changed to attract more buyers to buy office space and homes.

Fahmi Fadzil (PH-Lembah Pantai) said he agreed with Nazri and told the latter to use and promote names such as Kampung Kerinchi overseas, including Europe.

Nazri said the name of a place was linked to its identity and the price of homes was linked to the location and not the name.
