KUALA LUMPUR:
The government’s move to only provide equal allocation of funds to opposition MPs from parties involved in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Putrajaya has been criticised by an independent MP who says it is akin to punishing his constituents.

Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Ind-Muar) told the Dewan Rakyat that he had written a letter to Speaker Azhar Harun regarding deputy special functions minister Mastura Mohd Yazid’s statement in September that all MPs, regardless of political affiliation, will be given equal allocations for the remainder of the year.

He said Mastura had also “stressed” that the equal allocation to all MPs will be distributed immediately.

“But it’s now December and until today, Muar has not seen a single sen,” he said.

It was previously reported that Mastura told the Dewan Rakyat that the decision to give all MPs equal funds from September to December received the consent of Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

An MoU signed between the government and Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders in September states that equal funding would be provided for government and opposition MPs.

However, law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar recently clarified that the equal allocation of funds only applies to MPs from PH component parties.

Syed Saddiq said the move was “blatantly wrong” and said the government needs to answer to Muar constituents on why they were being punished for not supporting the government.

“Where is the justice? MPs who are with the government can get between RM3.8 million to RM5 million while PH MPs can get RM3.8 million next year,” he said, adding that there should be no discrimination against any constituency based on political support.

Maszlee Malik (PH-Simpang Renggam) then stated that his constituency had not received the allocation as well. The former education minister officially joined PH component PKR last week.
