It began when state opposition leader Rizam Ismail (BN-Sungai Air Tawar) raised concerns about the supply disruptions, which he described as “endemic”, even though the state government had spent millions to address the problem.
“Every year, I see the state government announcing increased expenditure for water supply services, apparently to ensure that the supply disruptions will be resolved,” he said.
However, he was interrupted by Lau Weng San (PH-Banting), who stated that Pahang and Johor under the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration also faced water supply issues.
Lau was then cut in by Mohd Shamsudin Lias (BN-Sungai Burong), who said he was disappointed with the water supply management in Selangor which caused much difficulties for the people.
“The people of Selangor have a deep sense of grievance over water supply. Every year, they spend a lot of money to store water,” he said.
There was some tension when Shamsudin was reprimanded by deputy speaker Hasnul Baharuddin, who asked him to summarise his question and give way to Rizam to debate.
When Shamsudin ignored Hasnul, a war of words erupted between him and Teng Chang Khim (PH-Bandar Baru Klang), who stood up to read the rule book asking the Sungai Burong assemblyman to sit down.
As soon as the situation calmed down, Hasnul asked Rizam to continue the debate.
Rizam urged the state government to monitor the water issue so that supply disruptions could be minimised.
He also asked menteri besar Amirudin Shari to state the percentage of water supply problems successfully resolved and the costs incurred.
