The Bersatu vice-president has also resigned from his role as the party’s state chief effective immediately.
“My official resignation letter will be handed over to Bersatu president and PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin tomorrow,” he said in a Facebook post this morning.
“I would like to apologise for all the mistakes during my tenure as chairman of Melaka PN and as Bersatu chief in the state.”
He said his resignation was to pave the way for new leaders to take over the party and coalition in the state in preparation for the next general election (GE15).
It would also allow him to focus on strengthening the Tangga Batu division of PN and Bersatu, where he was the assemblyman prior to this month’s state election.
“I hope and pray that the people of Melaka and Malaysians in general, will continue to support PN. Hopefully, PN will achieve greater success in GE15.”
His coalition was dealt a stinging blow in Melaka last weekend, securing just two seats of the 28 it had contested.
Barisan Nasional secured 21 seats and a two-thirds majority in the state polls.
Pakatan Harapan faired a little better, winning five seats – four by DAP and one by Amanah – though it lost more than half the seats it had won in GE14.
