Both were not wearing masks and carrying out door-to-door visits during the Melaka polls, says health ministry.

PETALING JAYA:
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the party’s Melaka chief Ab Rauf Yusoh paid dearly for not wearing face masks and carrying out door-to-door visits during the Melaka polls.

They were handed a RM10,000 fine each for violating Covid-19 SOPs.

The health ministry said they were compounded after being caught in a viral video at an undisclosed location in Masjid Tanah.

It said the ban on door-to-door visits and all forms of campaigning had been made known much earlier to all those participating in the polls.

“We will continue to monitor for SOP compliance, and we will not hesitate to compound any individuals or organisations who violate the SOPs which are still in place,” it said in a statement.

The ministry issued the compound fine notice under Rule 16 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within Infected Local Areas) (National Recovery Plan) Regulations 2021.
