KOTA KINABALU:
Former federal minister Mohamaddin Ketapi will remain as the Segama assemblyman despite his exit from Warisan, Sabah state assembly speaker Kadzim M Yahya said.

Kadzim said the state seat would not be vacated despite Mohamaddin’s departure from Warisan on Oct 30.

“I was in Kuala Lumpur when I received an email from Mohamaddin on Oct 30 with a letter and document cancelling all the pledges (aku janji) he had signed with Warisan before the Sabah election last year.

“Following that, my office on Nov 1 received a letter from a law firm claiming to act for Mohamaddin, confirming his resignation (from the state seat).

“The next day, however, we received another letter with a statutory declaration from Mohamaddin, denying that he had signed the resignation letter and that he had appointed a law firm to act on his behalf,” Kadzim told reporters at his office here today.

He also said he met up with Mohamaddin yesterday.

“He stressed that he never resigned (as an assemblyman) and had no reason to do so.

“The undated resignation letter is not valid under the law, so Mohamaddin remains the Segama representative,” he said.

Mohamaddin, who is also the Lahad Datu MP, announced his resignation from Warisan last month to become an independent assemblyman supporting the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government.

He was the third assemblyman to leave the party led by former chief minister Shafie Apdal, after Hassan A Gani Pg Amir (Sebatik) and Yusof Yacob (Sindumin).

Despite being friendly with GRS at the state level, Mohamaddin said he would be “purely an independent MP at the federal level”.
