Nominations will begin at 9am with candidates given an hour to submit their nomination forms to reduce the risk of transmission.
Based on guidelines set by the Election Commission (EC), only candidates and their proposers and seconders are allowed to enter nomination centres.
Nomination day procedures
Candidates, proposers and seconders with a fever, cough and cold, or a body temperature above 37.4°C will not be allowed to enter the nomination centre. They will instead be handled by assistant returning officers in full personal protective equipment.
The nomination form of the affected candidate will then be sent via chat messaging to the returning officer.
Candidates are also prohibited from walking in a parade with their supporters, or from holding group activities. These SOPs must also be followed by candidates during the campaign period and at the tallying centre when the counting of ballots begins.
The election campaign will see candidates maximising online campaigning methods or using social media during the campaign period to comply with the ban on public gatherings by the health ministry.
Polling day procedures
On polling day, polling centre guides will screen voters’ body temperature. Voters will be required to sanitise their hands and wear face masks.
Anyone with symptoms or fever with a temperature above 37.4°C will be barred from entering the polling station and will be taken to a special station manned by health ministry staff.
Symptomatic voters will be assisted by polling centre guides until they complete the voting process. Guides will place ballot papers in a plastic bag which will then be sanitised before they are placed in ballot boxes.
Voters will also be required to scan the MySejahtera QR code or record their personal information before entering their designated voting channels.
An EC spokesperson said as of yesterday, 550 nomination forms had been sold while 12,900 individuals had been appointed to manage the Melaka polls.
Polling will be held on Nov 20 to elect 28 members of the state assembly. Melaka has 495,196 registered voters, of whom 240,530 or 48.57% are men, and 254,666 or 51.43% women.
