Law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar says voting channels have been increased to ensure social distancing among voters before they cast their ballot papers.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar says his ministry has not been informed of the SOPs for the Melaka state election on Nov 20.

Responding to a question by Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-Kota Melaka) on steps that will be undertaken by the Election Commission (EC) to encourage more Melaka voters to come out and vote, he said that SOPs are being drawn up by the health ministry and the National Security Council.

“For the convenience of Melaka voters, EC has done the preparations, like setting up camps for voters who are ill and the Covid-19 positive and increasing voting channels to ensure social distancing among voters before they cast their ballot papers.

“SOPs are enforced by the health ministry and the National Security Council (NSC). It is up to the EC to implement the SOPs.

“So far, we have not been informed on the types of SOPs that will be implemented for the Melaka state election,” said Wan Junaidi.

Yesterday, election watchdog Bersih 2.0 urged the authorities to unveil the guidelines to ensure a safe and fair election for the state election.

“Where are the guidelines?” asked Bersih chairman Thomas Fann.

“Like all contesting parties and candidates, we are anxiously waiting to see if the EC will come out with rules that would comply with the national recovery plan Phase 4 SOPs,” he told FMT.
