Ensure budget handouts reach intended groups, says Salleh

The former Sabah chief minister said the 2022 budget reflected the government’s continued strategy to help all, irrespective of party leanings.

Salleh Said Keruak says all forms of cash assistance are welcome but must reach the right people.
PETALING JAYA:
The government has been urged to ensure all handouts announced in Budget 2022 reach the intended groups with proper implementation of the programmes announced.

Former Sabah chief minister Salleh Said Keruak said the thrust of the budget reflected the government’s continued strategy of wanting to help people across the board, irrespective of party leanings.

“From the Bantuan Rakyat 1 Malaysia (BR1M), Bantuan Sara Hidup (BSH), Bantuan Prihatin Nasional (BPN) to Bantuan Keluarga Malaysia (BKM), they are all basically a form of cash assistance for all. Of course, we welcome such help.

“However, we hope the implementation of the budget continues to be improved so that it achieves its true goal — that is to help those who really need it,” the Usukan assemblyman said in a Facebook post.

Finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz yesterday announced an allocation of RM332.1 billion for the 2022 budget. It is the biggest in the country’s history.

The budget represented an increase of RM9.6 billion from the RM322.5 billion for 2021.

Zafrul said the budget is meant to complement three main objectives, namely the well-being of people, ensuring business resilience as well as creating a sustainable economy.
