259 new Delta cases, 2 new Beta cases

Health director-general says Malaysia has detected a total of 2,385 cases involving the highly infectious Delta variant.

PETALING JAYA:
Studies on Covid-19 variants in Malaysia have found 259 new Covid-19 cases involving the Delta variant and two involving the Beta variant.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement that studies by genomic institutes and medical research centres have found a total of 2,645 Covid-19 cases involving variants of concern (VOC) and variants of interest (VOI).

Of the VOC, there had been 2,385 Delta cases, 226 Beta cases and 14 Alpha cases so far.

In the VOI category, there had been 13 Theta cases, four Kappa cases and three Eta cases.

The data was based on ongoing studies by the Institute for Medical Research, Faculty of Medicine (FOM-UM), Integrative Pharmacogenomics Institute (iPROMISE-UiTM), the Malaysia Genome Institute and the Tropical Infectious Diseases Research and Education Centre (TIDREC-UM).
