KUALA LUMPUR: A motion to elect a new deputy speaker in the Dewan Rakyat has been postponed to the next meeting, the second time it has been deferred.
The motion was tabled by law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and supported by Takiyuddin Hassan (PAS-Kota Bharu).
In September, a similar motion was postponed to the meeting in early October to allow for a constitutional amendment to create a third deputy speaker’s post, which is meant to be filled by an opposition MP.
Azalina Othman Said had resigned as the deputy speaker on Aug 23 – after Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s government came to power – citing moral, personal and political conflicts as the reasons.
However, last month, she returned to the post “temporarily”.
The other deputy speaker is Mohd Rashid Hasnon.
