KUALA LUMPUR:
With the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore high-speed rail (HSR) project scrapped, the government is now studying the viability of a Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok link, said economic affairs minister Mustapa Mohamed.

He said research on the KL-Johor Bahru HSR project, without a link to Singapore, has been completed but had yet to be presented to the Cabinet.

“A pre-viability study is also being carried out between KL and Bangkok,” he told the Dewan Rakyat, after mentioning that the KL-Singapore HSR project was cancelled following failure to reach an agreement before the Dec 31, 2020 deadline.

In 2016, Malaysia and Thailand agreed to study the possibility of linking both countries to boost bilateral and economic ties. Thailand said it was ready to look into the study of HSR, which would help extend the country’s connectivity with Singapore.

However, the government prioritised the high speed rail connectivity between KL and Singapore.

Previously, Mustapa said the KL-Singapore HSR link was cancelled due to the impact of Covid-19 on the economy, forcing the government to re-evaluate the project.
