Vaccine supply enough for 142% of population, says health ministry

After everyone is inoculated, the balance will be used for booster shots and jabs for the young.

Malaysia has ordered supplies from five manufacturers and the international Covax programme.
PETALING JAYA:
The supply of vaccines procured by the government is enough to cover 142% of the Malaysian population, the health ministry said.

The ministry said almost 88 million doses had been booked from five manufacturers – AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Sinovac, CanSino and Gamaleya – and the international Covax programme.

Once the Malaysian population has been vaccinated, the balance of vaccine supplies have been recommended for use as an additional third or booster dose and for vaccinating adolescents aged 12 and above.

The entire supply of vaccines is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2022.

The vaccination priorities for adolescents include those aged 12 and above with comorbidities and teenagers aged 16 and 17 regardless of health.

The vaccination details were provided by the ministry in a written reply to Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim Chee Keong. He had asked the health ministry for the estimated remaining supply of vaccines after 100% of the population had been vaccinated and what the government planned to do with it.
