No proof supplements can curb Covid-19, says expert

A dietitian warns that taking certain vitamins and minerals in excess can instead pose health risks.

Supplements are unnecessary even during the Covid-19 pandemic, says a dietitian.
KOTA KINABALU:
There is no clinical evidence that supplements or certain types of food could help prevent or treat Covid-19, a dietitian said.

Khor Ban Hock of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) said many people now believe in taking certain supplements to improve their immune system in the hope that it will prevent them from getting the virus.

“Actually, for many who practice a balanced and healthy diet, supplements are unnecessary even during the Covid-19 pandemic,” he told FMT.

According to Khor, consuming supplements with Vitamin D, zinc, and Vitamin C – which are reported to reduce symptoms of normal flu – can be detrimental if taken in excess.

Khor said taking an excess of Vitamin A can affect bone health, increase the risk of lung cancer, and influence the development of foetuses in pregnant women.

Meanwhile, Vitamin D could also reduce bone density if taken in excess.

“For individuals taking too much Vitamin C, they could suffer from diarrhoea and bloating. It also increases the risk of kidney stones in men.

“An excess of zinc can cause indigestion, diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, and also interrupt the absorption of copper in the body,” he said.

Meanwhile, Khor advised consumers who wish to take supplements to ensure that the products are registered with the health ministry to ensure safety and quality.
