Istana Negara says he will perform the functions until the Yang di-Pertuan Agong returns from his visit to the UK on Oct 23.

IPOH:
The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, has consented to the appointment of the Perak Council of Regency effective today, while he performs the functions of the King, who has left for the United Kingdom for a 10-day special visit.

The King and Queen will then stay back in London until Oct 23.

Perak Royal Council secretary Ayop Hashim, in a statement, said the Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa, had been appointed as the chairman of the Perak Council of Regency, while Orang Kaya Bendahara Seri Maharaja Gen (Rtd) Mohd Zahidi Zainuddin and Orang Kaya Kaya Seri Agar Diraja Ramli Ngah Talib are its members.

“This is in line with Section Two, Article XV of the Perak State Constitution, for the period when His Highness is performing the functions of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said.

Sultan Nazrin, who is the deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong, is performing the functions of the King, as provided for under Article 33 (1) of the Federal Constitution, for the period when the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong are visiting the UK.

Yesterday, Comptroller of the Royal Household of Istana Negara Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, in a statement, said the royal couple were making a special visit to the UK from Sept 17 to 27.

He said they would then stay back in London and are scheduled to return home on Oct 23.

Fadil said the special visit is the King’s second to the UK after he became the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, with the first being a 10-day trip beginning Dec 9, 2019.

The royal couple arrived in London at 8pm Friday (3am Saturday in Malaysia).

Istana Negara, in a statement on its official Facebook account today, said the special aircraft carrying them touched down at Luton Airport.

They were received on arrival by Malaysian high commissioner to the UK Zakri Jaafar and his wife, Nor Aini Abdul Rahman.

The royal couple are scheduled to visit the Battersea Power Station project in London, the Malaysian high commission at Belgrave Square and the Tun Abdul Razak Research Centre in Brickendonbury, Hertford.

The programme for the visit also includes a meeting between them and the Malaysian community in London.

The King is also scheduled to attend the Sandhurst reunion dinner at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where the King studied between 1978 and 1979.

The King will also hold a meeting with the UK’s chief of defence staff Sir General Nicholas Carter to discuss bilateral military cooperation between Malaysia and the UK.

Carter had also attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
