Covid-19 ICUs in 8 states at 98% capacity or more

Meanwhile, intensive care wards in Kedah, Sabah, Penang and Perak have exceeded maximum capacity, says health DG.

Intensive care units (ICUs) in eight states are at 98% capacity or higher as at Sept 2, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today.

In a Facebook post, he said 76% of normal beds in Covid-19 hospitals were occupied as at 5pm yesterday, while 89% of ICU beds nationwide had been taken up.

Noor Hisham said ICUs in Covid-19 hospitals in Kedah, Sabah, Penang and Perak had exceeded their maximum capacity, while Perlis had 11 patients in critical care, or 100% of its capacity.

Kedah had 104 patients in ICU (128% of capacity), followed by Sabah (145 patients or 110%), Perak (90 patients or 106%) and Penang (69 patients or 101%).

Both Selangor and Johor were close to full capacity, with 99% and 98% ICU occupancy respectively. There were 337 ICU patients in Selangor, while in Johor the figure stood at 108.

As of yesterday, a total of 1,593 patients were warded in ICUs nationwide, he added.
