Food assistance remains available during MCO, says NGO

Those who are struggling financially are encouraged to reach out for help.

NGOs and private businesses continue to lend a helping hand to people badly affected by the pandemic.
PETALING JAYA:
Many NGOs and companies have taken the initiative to provide food banks to help those affected by the pandemic and resulting movement restrictions around the Klang Valley.

Among those who have joined the community initiative is comedian and actor Harith Iskander who called on the community to come together and support the White Flag movement after it was activated last month.

Harith, through his NGO, Pertubuhan Harapan Amal Harith Iskander, has been at the forefront to provide assistance to those in need.

“Call us at 019 7093103 and share details such as an address, telephone number and other relevant particulars that can make it easier for us to find those needing help.

“There is no time limit to ask for such assistance. This NGO has been registered with the Registrar of Societies,” he told FMT.

A web service provider company, Shinjiru Technology Sdn Bhd (Shinjiru), established a food bank on July 21 at Wisma Laxton for those living in the Klang Valley.

“This includes those who have lost their jobs and do not have enough income to support themselves and their families.

“Shinjiru has taken the initiative to help the community by providing food items and other daily necessities,” said Shinjiru chief technology officer Shaun Lim, adding that donations were also welcome.

The food bank is open during weekdays from 9am to 6pm at Wisma Laxton, Jalan Desa, Taman Desa, off Jalan Klang Lama in Kuala Lumpur.

“All you have to do is stop at our location and leave your donation on the table provided (placed next to Boost Juice, in front of Dita Group),” he said.

Last month, Malaysians nationwide banded together under the White Flag Project to help those in desperate need of food and assistance in light of the worsening Covid-19 health and economic crisis.

The White Flag Project or #BenderaPutih calls upon people needing assistance to wave a white cloth outside their house or to reach out for help without fear or shame, following a slew of suicide cases among people who had been struggling to get by.
