PETALING JAYA:
Former prime minister Najib Razak has taken a swipe at Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration, asking if it can be trusted after making numerous U-turns.

For instance, Najib said, the administration had said the emergency ordinances (EOs) had been revoked on July 21 but “that doesn’t seem to be the case”.

He said on Facebook that the administration had also claimed the “revocation does not need the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong”, referring to a July 29 statement by the Prime Minister’s Office that it was done according to the law, but now the administration had conceded the King was right.

On Aug 3, Muhyiddin said the motion would be debated during September’s Dewan Rakyat sitting.

The Palace had said the government had not got the King’s consent to revoke the EOs and that it had also not followed the King’s decree to table them for debate in the Dewan Rakyat.

Najib went on to list other U-turns by the government.

He said Muhyiddin had said there would not be any nationwide lockdown but then went on to impose movement control order 3.0 in May, followed by a total lockdown in June.

“He (Muhyiddin) also said 2021 will be a brighter year but we (rakyat) have been suffering throughout the year,” Najib added.

He said Muhyiddin had also announced that the general election would be held after the Emergency was lifted.

“He said the Emergency is needed to fight Covid-19 and it had nothing to do with political interest. But Covid-19 cases are now 10 times worse,” Najib said, after the health ministry reported 19,819 cases today. So far, Malaysia has reported 9,598 Covid-19 deaths.

“He (Muhyiddin) had also said Covid-19 was under control and gave an assurance that the government had controlled Covid-19,” Najib added.

Najib said Muhyiddin had assured 7% economic growth this year but went on to note that the economy was struggling due to prolonged lockdowns.

Based on these examples, Najib asked if Muhyiddin’s statements could be trusted.

Earlier, Muhyiddin, in a live address, said he was being attacked for refusing to interfere in the court process involving several individuals, alluding to Umno politicians fighting against several charges.

Najib, who has been convicted of graft and faces more charges, also asked what had happened to a graft case linked to Xavier Jayakumar, the former PKR MP who is now an independent and who has thrown his support for Muhyiddin as prime minister.

Najib said there was no reason for him to support a failed government which did U-turns constantly.

Yesterday, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party had withdrawn support for the PN-led government and Muhyiddin.
