The opposition coalition is also demanding for Azhar to state if he is going to adhere to the call by the King and Malay Rulers to reconvene Parliament to debate the emergency ordinances and the national recovery plan – or if he is merely going “to comply with the Cabinet’s directive”.
“If he cannot do this, it is best that he resigns,” the PH presidential council said in a statement.
The statement was issued by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
They went on to say that the coalition could not accept being called for a parliamentary sitting just to listen to a “ceramah” by ministers, without debates being held.
On Sunday, Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Mohd Rashid Hasnon said Parliament was looking at limiting the July 26 sitting to 80 MPs.
A five-day “special sitting” is being held to brief MPs on the national recovery plan.
Earlier this month, Azhar said the Dewan Rakyat will sit again for proper debates on Sept 6 to Sept 30 and again from Oct 25 to Dec 16.
PH also said it was shocked by Azhar’s claim that it was trying to drive a wedge between him, his office and the Palace.
“Such a statement should not be issued by a Speaker and one who uses unparliamentary language.”
Azhar had on Sunday told the PH presidential council to end the “politics of hate” after the coalition said that the Speaker and the Perikatan Nasional-led government would be disobeying the King by not allowing debates in the upcoming sitting.
PH this evening said that Azhar need not worry as they would not be tabling any motion of no confidence against the prime minister.
“We only want to focus on important issues related to the Covid-19 pandemic and the hardship the public is enduring due to the economic crisis.”
