PETALING JAYA:
A man who refused to wear a face mask caused a scene at a nasi lemak stall in Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur, yesterday, berating the vendor and a customer after being told to put on a mask.

In a video that has gone viral, the man in a black singlet and shorts could be seen taunting another customer, who was dressed in an orange T-shirt, to call the police on him for not wearing a mask.

“What do you want to do, call police ah? Call lah ******, what are you waiting for? Your phone got no credit? Need me to buy you credit? Then **** off,” he said, before a girl who helps her mother operate the stall steps in between the two men before the situation could escalate.

The girl, who wanted to be known as Lyn Centino, said she and her mother had been operating their stall at Taman Desa for the past eight years, adding that the man in orange was a regular customer.

She told FMT that the man in the singlet had come to buy nasi lemak around 10.30am when her mother noticed he was not wearing a mask.

“My mom was packing the nasi lemak when she signed to him, asking him to wear his mask. Then he shouted at my mom, ‘Who the hell are you? You sell nasi lemak, just do your job’. My mom was really taken aback.

“Then, another customer, who’s a regular of ours, replied to him that the SOP was that it’s compulsory to wear masks. The man couldn’t take it and wanted to get into a fight.

“If you watch the video, they were almost going to fight. So I quickly stepped in to break it up before something bad could happen,” she said.

Although she did not file a police report over the matter, Centino said she and her mother were quite shaken up and stressed out by the incident.

“Plus, it was a Sunday and it was a very busy day. Then, this happened all of a sudden. It affected us immediately and we felt quite sad,” she said.

In a statement, Brickfields deputy police chief Basri Sagoni said the case was being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and Rule 17(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulations 2021 for failing to comply with Covid-19 SOPs.

“The public is advised not to speculate on this viral video for fear of creating public anger and must comply with all the rules set by the government,” he said.

Basri also urged those with relevant information on the case to contact the police.
