Allow debates in Parliament, don’t go against Agong’s call, say PH leaders

They say Parliament must be allowed to function as usual so MPs can debate and defend the people's rights.

Pakatan Harapan said it had not filed a no-confidence motion against the PM as it wishes to focus on people’s issues following the Covid-19 crisis and the economic recession.
PETALING JAYA:
Pakatan Harapan (PH) has warned the Perikatan Nasional administration against violating the country’s democratic institutions by not allowing MPs to debate during the special parliamentary session from July 26.

In a statement, its presidential council said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong was of the view that Parliament should be held as soon as possible to allow MPs to debate the Emergency Ordinance, National Recovery Plan and government spending in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It noted that the King had repeated this call three times on Feb 24, June 16 and June 29.

PH said it had sent a motion to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Harun on July 12 to debate the matters raised by the King.

“No no-confidence motion against the prime minister was tabled by PH, which wishes to focus on the people’s issues following the Covid-19 crisis and the economic recession,” it said.

However, shortly after that, it was announced that the five-day sitting from July 26 was to brief MPs on the National Recovery Plan.

PH urged Azhar and the government not to go against the King’s views and to allow Parliament to function as usual so that MPs can debate and fulfil their responsibilities in defending the people’s rights.
