KOTA KINABALU:
The Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) has decided against reopening public recreational parks following a massive spike in Covid-19 infections in Sabah today.

Mayor Noorliza Awang Alip had earlier this morning said the public may again use the Likas Bay park here, a favourite haunt of joggers, from tomorrow.

This was in line with the reopening of two other public parks, Taman Ujana Rimba Tropika and Taman Tun Fuad Stephens, on July 13.

However, at 4.50pm today, Noorliza said they decided to postpone the reopening of the Likas Bay park and other public parks within the city limits with immediate effect.

“The decision was taken after taking into consideration the drastic rise in Covid-19 infections currently in the city, which is worrying us,” she said in a statement.

“Taman Awam Tun Fuad Stephens and Taman Awam Ujana Rimba will also be closed until further notice,” she added.

Sabah local government and housing minister Masidi Manjun had earlier today said the state had recorded 647 new cases in the last 24 hours, almost double yesterday’s numbers.

From the new cases, a total of 312 were detected in the state capital.
